The Valentines Flower Test

Many people will be sending flowers for Valentine's Day. But how do you know if you got your money's worth?

CBS 11's Consumer Reporter Bennett Cunningham tests several North Texas florists to see whose arrangements would blossom... and whose would fade away.

Red roses are the queen of flowers. They're the perfect way to say I love you for Valentines Day. It's the busiest day of the year for florists.

So, we decided to do an experiment. We ordered 4 dozen roses from florists in North Texas. Here were the rules. The flowers must be long stem roses in a vase. The industry defines long stem roses as 60 centimeters long - or 24 inches. The roses must be delivered between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. And each arrangement had to include a card with a specific message.

All the roses arrived on time. The first dozen we received was from Petals and Stems. The arrangement was enormous….

Brad Weinstein manages Petal and Stems Florists. He says developing a rapport with your florist is better than going blindly on line and buying flowers.

The floral industry defines a long stem rose as 60 centimeters from the head to the end of the stem….
